Book review Slam

Sam is 16 years old, and his biggest interests in life are skateboarding and girls. But one day he meets gorgeous Alicia, and they soon become in love. But His first real love doesn’t last long and several weeks later they break up. But that’s when things start happening. Alicia is pregnant!
The author of the book Nick Hornby has written several famous books about teenagers. He describes teenager’s life in a perfect way. Off course these stories are a bit extreme, but it’s much more normal than most people think.

Theme and Plot

The main theme of the book is about teenage pregnancy, and the consequences of having sex. In the beginning he has a normal life where skating takes most of the time. He likes skating with his friends rabbit and rubbish. Rabbit is a good skater with a low IQ, while rubbish is rubbish at skating, but nice to talk with. Sam is in other words a normal boy until he finds out about his ex-girlfriends pregnancy. In the beginning he freaks out. He gets whizzed into the future by his best friend TH (Tony Hawk), where he gets valuable information about the future. But seeing his ex-girlfriend pregnant makes him so scared he runs away to Hastings. After spending a little while in Hastings, he gets bad conscience and decides to do what’s best for Alicia and the baby. The next couple of months are the most turbulent days of his life. He gets a boy called Rufus (Roof), and this changes his life forever.

Genre

The book is about everyday drama, and therefore real life takes a huge part of this book. But surprisingly this book also has a hint of scions fiction in it. Several times during the book he gets whizzed into the future by Tony Hawk, a poster on the wall.

Slam is a funny book with many funny thoughts and episodes. But the way he writes is a bit boring sometimes, because he uses so many words to get to the point. But despite this I think it’s a book for most people between 10-70 years.
